Here’s where I explain what The Lit Club is all about.

(clears throat)

The Lit Club is a creative oasis where literature, healing, and cannabis converge in a series of playfully sophisticated events.

We are a literary salon, creative community, and event series that celebrates the power of stories, healing, and the magic of the Green Goddess, creating pleasure-centered experiences for artists, writers, and creative human beings.

The Lit Club isn’t just any group—it’s a movement aiming to balance the sacred feminine and restore some peace to this wild world. (Yeah, I know it’s a lofty goal, but we have to start somewhere.)

Inspired by Osun, the Yoruba feminine deity of creativity, and Seshat, the Egyptian goddess of writing and wisdom (often shown wearing a cute hemp leaf in her headdress), our space is as grounded as it is dreamy.

Think of The Lit Club as the love child of the Harlem Renaissance’s Dark Tower Salon, kickback parties, the Club des Hashischins of 19th century Paris, and your favorite living room conversationalists. The Lit Club is where good talk and good vibes are the norm.

We’re all about supporting harm reduction efforts, conscious cannabis and wine brands, indie bookstores, emerging artists, and social justice organizations like Yoga Roots on Location, Pop-Hop Books and Print, The Salt Eaters Books, and The Prison Book Program.

Our mission? To cultivate empathy, facilitate healing, and center joy. Big goal? Sure. Necessary for the survival of our planet? Absolutely. And if we get to chill with some cool people and amazing stories along the way, even better.

The Lit Club stands tall on three pillars of co-evolution: art, healing, and pleasure justice.

Healing

Protect and care for the body, mind, and soul to include the intersectional wounds created by trauma and oppression.

Art

Express and nurture the full spectrum of the mind, body, and soul through loving artistic practices and attention to craft.

Pleasure

Center and expand personal and collective happiness, joy, and contentment.

I’m Hannah Eko, lifelong writer, ex-Coast Guard officer, late-blooming stoner, and founder of The Lit Club. Yes, I fully admit it—The Lit Club started as a high idea. One evening, during my newbie smoking days, my journal became a portal to words I’d previously not had the capacity to explore. I had long suffered from intense writer’s anxiety, but with cannabis and a journal, my inner world calmed down enough to allow me to write with something like peace.

Books have been my friends and my guides since I was a seven year old earning pizza parties for number of books read. Weed has helped me heal through complex trauma, has brought me peace, and has connected me with amazing people. I knew I wanted to share the sacred synergy of two of my greatest loves and healers and create experiences where weed and words became muse, medicine, and magic.

During the wild days of the pandemic lockdown, I started a monthly virtual weed and writing workshop called Women, Writing, Weed & Wine with friends. We discussed books like Raven Leilani’s Luster and authors from James Baldwin to Banana Yoshimoto. We wrote love letters to our melancholy, our anxiety, our dread, our cheer, our despair. We had the honor of having Deesha Philyaw guest teach about setting creative boundaries and Bowie Rowan teach a personal instruction manual for love.

On April 20, 2023, Women, Writing, Weed & Wine held its first IRL sold-out event at The Salt Eaters Bookshop, a black-woman owned independent bookstore in Leimert Park. (The LAPD shut it down the with ten minutes to go even though there was no cannabis present, but that’s a story for another day…) Finally, the Lit Club was out in the world—a literary sanctuary and femme-led oasis blending weed, words, healing, and pleasure.

Here, we defy censorship, build creative community, give back through our pleasure, and uplift marginalized voices. Because life is too short and too beautiful not to. All Lit Club events are for people 21+.

We kick things off with our exclusively inclusive signature event:

Legalize Lit: where banned books and bud unite

Our trailblazing cannabis and book pairing extravaganza :)

Weed and books have a lot in common. Unfortunately, one of those commonalities is fear-based censorship. Held at local dispensaries, Legalize Lit offers curated suggestions for matching specific banned books with the perfect cannabis strain, product, or vibe.

Like pairing Fight Club with a dab of a bodyhigh indica.

Or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings with a relaxed sativa ginger tea.

Each Legalize Lit comes with a limited edition mini-zine celebrating the loving resistance and daring creativity of words and weed.
